It’s time to hear the true story of Pocahontas.

The Problem

Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than any other demographic group. The harmful “Indian Princess” stereotype portrayed in popular media continues to shape a false narrative about Indigenous women and these stereotypes lead to violence. It’s time to flip the script.

The Project

We created an alternative audio track to play over the original Pocahontas Disney movie on mute.

In this version, Pocahontas - or to use her real name, Matoaka - is the narrator and tells her real story which is not a romance, but rather a tragedy.

By taking steps to break down stereotypes that hypersexualize and demean Indigenous women and girls, the values that maintain colonial violence are confronted and we can work toward making a change.
